**Short answer**Clean the lens, face a window, don't hold the phone too close, tap to focus on your face, and lock focus and exposure so it doesn't hunt while you move.

* **Too close:** the front camera can lose focus within arm's length; move it back a little.

* **Lock it:** AE/AF lock stops focus jumping when your hand passes the lens.
